Merciful Doubting

May 14th, 2023

Jude 1:17-25

Secured in a governmental archive is a collection of objects that Abraham Lincoln had in his pocket at the time of his assassination. Among the items was a packet of newspaper clippings— all complimentary to the President. In fact, one was a speech from a British statesman who called Lincoln “one of the greatest men of all time.”

Why did the President have these? Maybe Lincoln, the target of many critics at the time, read and re-read the articles for reassurance in private moments. Could it be that the Great Emancipator might have had doubts and needed confidence?

We all have doubts in our Christian walk, and Jude has some advice for his readers when he says “Be merciful to those who doubt.” The sure cure for doubt for us is the divine confidence God gives us as we serve Him.

So what is divine confidence? Not arrogance of course, but rather a sense of faith that comes when we are in His plan and we know that He walks with us. With that there can be no doubts.
