Clothes In All That Is Of God

Colossians 3:12-17
What specifically strikes me in Colossians 3 is Paul’s command to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts” (v. 15). That sounds like a no-brainer! Yes, of course I want the peace of Christ to rule in my heart! But then I think, how does that happen?
It happens as I become “clothed” in the attributes Paul describes: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. And yet, these attributes are not possible to acquire on my own. I may be able to imitate them for a while, but unless a genuine transformation of my heart is taking place, I am sure to stumble back into the way of life Paul describes earlier in Chapter 3.
How do we clothe ourselves in these virtues? By daily surrendering our lives to Jesus as Lord and following in His Way. What we once could never do, we find we are able to do—not because of our effort, but because of God’s work in us. It’s a choice we can make in an instant, but it’s a journey that we take over a lifetime.
