James 1:22-27

Something I appreciate about the book of James is the lack of “sugarcoating” in these words. James likes to tell it like it is. Don’t just listen to the word, do what it says.

A hindrance to the people of God may be the way we love to talk about Scripture, but sometimes lack the “actually doing what it says” part of it all. James makes it pretty clear that following Jesus means to give what we believe a form of life, or else what we say and believe is meaningless. It is like telling a friend or spouse “I love you!” while talking over them, ignoring their needs, or crossing their boundaries. The lack of a tangible expression of love leads one to believe the words are worthless.

The same is true with our relationship with Christ. To love Jesus and to claim His name as Savior needs to be paralleled with a life that is consistent with our words. James helps us out with a definition of faultless religion: to care for widows and orphans, and not to be polluted by the world.
