Monuments of Grace

April 8th, 2023

1 Corinthians 15:50-58

Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois is a beautiful place. While there are many notable monuments none draws more interest than that of the sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Over 150 years after his death his tomb remains one of the most visited in the country. Lincoln’s death was a great national tragedy. The monument, however, is not to his death but to his life. It is the life lived which gives meaning to the monument.

According to the Bible death entered our world because of sin (Romans 5:12). It is sin, rebellion against our heavenly Father’s will, which gives death its sting. It is the law, the truth of God revealed in His Word, which gives sin the power of death. “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). The law has no power and death holds no sting for those forgiven by the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

Once again, it is because of the life Jesus lived that we have the victory over both sin and death. We are the monuments of His grace.
