Serve One or The Other
March 26th, 2023
Joshua 24:11-16
I just want to get this out there: You can have your cake and eat it, too! Why have a cake if you can’t eat it! Let the people say, “Amen!”
The point Joshua was making in Joshua 24, however, couldn’t be more true and necessary, then and now. When it comes to serving God, you can’t serve another. God had been faithful to the Israelites. He had led them out of bondage and set them on a path toward freedom. Yet, because slavery is such bondage, they were always inclined to return to their old, Egyptian ways which included the worship of false gods. It was a temptation then. It is still a temptation today.
Even in 2023, where Christianity has become a mixed bag of what God requires and what people want, the clarion call of Joshua rings down the halls of time with renewed truth, “Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped . . . and serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:14b).
May the Lord raise up many who will declare, “as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15c).
