Psalm 119:89-96
Enemies stink. They threaten us on every side, causing us to take our focus off the things that are most important. Yet the Psalmist reminds us of the eternalness of God’s word and faithfulness, just as Jesus does in Matthew 24:35. The Psalmist declares that even though the wicked are waiting to destroy him, he will continue to ponder God’s words (v. 95). God’s words are so crucial to life that they should be pondered even in the face of certain destruction by enemies. The Psalmist acknowledges that if God’s word hadn’t been his delight, he would have perished (v. 92). Delight here is a picture of a young child enjoying being bounced on the knee of his parent.
Attempting to ponder on the Word of God while trying to deal with all of our everyday menial tasks on top of dealing with enemies seems impossible. Scripture promises that if we do, we will not be destroyed. Instead we will be like a young child, content to be bounced on the knee of a loving parent, realizing our troubles are all in the hands of a faithful God.
