True Commitment

November 19th, 2022

Acts 14:21-28

Acts 14 is an amazing testimony to the fact that when one is committed to the Lord and guided by Him, he or she will succeed. That does not mean, however, that God will make their path smooth.

Paul and Barnabas went through incredible struggles and suffering as they traveled through Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe preaching the gospel. They had to deal with the misguided attitude of the Gentiles wanting to worship them when they saw the miracle of healing. Then there was violent resistance from the Jews who nearly stoned them. And yet, these servants of Jesus continued to preach the gospel.

We see here the essence of true commitment:  the resolve to follow Christ through any circumstances. In response, God in His grace was with them every step of the way, bringing their work to completion. When the gospel is preached by committed men and women of God in the midst of all kinds of circumstances, other people become disciples and churches are born. This is the greatest miracle and the truest success.
