Not On Our Own

Judges 4:11-17
The contrasting image in Judges 4 is almost a comical one. On one side is the confident, experienced, well-equipped warrior, Sisera. He has 900 iron chariots and legions of troops behind him. He hears the wimpy Israelites are on the move and thinks, “Great—this is our chance to put these people in their place.” And while Barak’s army of 10,000 warriors is no small number, they are clearly meant to be understood as the underdog.
Yet God caused Sisera’s army to just panic. They lost all sense of focus and confidence, and their leader—this powerful warrior of a leader—jumped off his chariot and ran away! There was no back-and-forth, nail-biting suspense of wondering who is going to win this fight. The Lord (v. 14, 15), the God of Israel (v.6), Yahweh the great I Am (Exodus 3:14), is with God’s people and will give them victory.
Victory in our own lives doesn’t always come so smoothly, but whatever way it comes, it comes through Christ! Where in our lives is God wanting to give us victory that we simply couldn’t have on our own?
