Meteoric Bread

Exodus 16:1-9
God’s people have always included groups that I call the “Back to Egypt Committee.” The people in such groups may not know much, but they do know that things were better the way they used to be. The way things were when we first became a part of the people of God becomes our preference and as times and culture changes, we want to revert back to our preferences. Our preferences can quickly become idols as we turn the way things used to be into the way things ought to be.
Lucky for us, God responds to the “Back to Egypt Committee” with grace and provision. The people complain that they’re going to starve to death in this wilderness, so God makes bread fall from the sky like meteors.
I’m not sure if it’s humorous or tragic that it isn’t too long until the “Back to Egypt Committee” is complaining about the bread from heaven and quail. “Manna and quail again? Can’t we have steak tartare? I’d kill for a corn dog!” Thanks be to God, He graciously provides despite our complaints.

Amen! We can become ungrateful and whiny at times. It happens. But as children of God, let us remind ourselves what Paul wrote to the church of Thessalonica, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Sometimes when we becoming consumed with the things that are not working out, we make room for the enemy and his fiery darts to cloud our minds and our hearts. Let us not tell others about how great our problems and frustrations are and complain and complain and complain, but tell our problems and frustrations how GREAT is our GOD. Hallelujah! He reigns above all!
