God Honors Obedience
August 30th, 2022
Exodus 1:12-22
Pharaoh decides that enslaving the Hebrews is not enough. He orders the Hebrew midwives to kill any male babies born to Hebrew women. The midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, disobey his orders out of their fear of God. Shiphrah and Puah recognized that God is the God of life and to kill an innocent baby would go against the God they worshiped. As a result, the God of life rewards them for their faithful obedience by bringing life to them with the blessing of a family. They choose their fear and reverence of God over their fear of Pharaoh and the ruling powers. For this, God blesses them.
God honors His followers who obey Him, especially when it is hard. Following God isn’t easy and often means we will be at odds with the world. However, as we see in this story, God honors those who obey Him through hard times.
When choosing to follow God seems dangerous, we remember the story of Shiphrah and Puah. Despite the suffering that following the will of God might produce, God will honor us for remaining true to Him.
