Jesus Leads

Matthew 10:11-20
In my line of work, I read a fair amount on leadership. I attend seminars and keep an eye on the all the latest advice from church leadership gurus. I know how to Win Friends and Influence People and I’ve practiced the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership in order to become The Emotionally Healthy Leader.
Perhaps this is why Jesus’ training program seems so, well, lackluster to me. Jesus sends His followers out with a few instructions, then notes that when they’re in the worst and most perilous situations, when their training kicks in, what do they have to fall back on? Don’t worry about it. The Spirit will speak for you.
This is so important, and so just like Jesus! Just when we begin to think everything is dependent on us being smart or wily enough, Jesus reminds us that we are special because we are loved by God. God’s mission isn’t dependent on extraordinary leadership. God’s mission is dependent on extraordinary discipleship.
