The Unshakable Kingdom
July 10th, 2022
Hebrews 12:22-29
The writer of Hebrews recalls the encounter of Moses and the children of Israel with the Lord at Sinai: a mountain burning with fire; cloaked in darkness, gloom, and storm; with the sound of a trumpet blast and “a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, because they could not bear what was commanded” (Hebrews 12:18-21). The people were greatly afraid of the Lord’s awesome presence.
Then the writer directs our mind to Mount Zion. Not the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Hebrews 12:22). This is the eternal dwelling place of God, His angels, and of those “whose names are written in heaven” (Hebrews 12:23). Earthly kingdoms will all be shaken, but this kingdom cannot. God’s voice, once feared, will be cause for worship and awe in that place.
This is the kingdom we are receiving through Christ. We have a hope that endures beyond the bounds of this earthly life. I can think of no better way to live, and no better condition to be in, when only that which cannot be shaken remains.
