John 14:15-24

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have Jesus with us all the time? You know, like the first disciples did. If you found yourself struggling with a decision, all you’d need to do is ask Jesus, and He could speak to you in an audible voice as you talked over a cup of coffee. If you were grieving the loss of a loved one, Jesus could embrace you and weep with you as He did with Mary following Lazarus’ death.

Almost every Christian has wondered, “What would it be like if Jesus were here with me right now?” The promise of God in John 14 is that Jesus is with us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, in any and every circumstance. Jesus shares these powerful words following His last meal with His disciples before His crucifixion, “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17a). Those two words in the middle matter: another Advocate. Not “the Advocate,” but “another Advocate.” An advocate who would never leave us or forsake us who is just like Jesus.
