Hebrews 4:1-7
When was the last time you thought about the power of “today”? We often dream about the potential power of tomorrow. There is no power in tomorrow because tomorrow is not guaranteed. Surely, yesterday has power. For many people, yesterday continues to hold incredible power over them. However, God longs for us to experience the power of “today.”
The author of Hebrews writes, God has “set a certain day, calling it ‘Today’” (v. 7). It’s as if the author is saying, “God has extended an invitation, and the invitation has an expiration date, and that expiration date is ‘Today.’” God can care for the past and the future when we trust Him with today.
God’s invitations are many: forgiveness, repentance, obedience, and salvation. We are invited to forgive as we’ve been forgiven. God’s invitations are many, but the opportunity to respond to those invitations is limited, and it’s limited to “Today.” Tomorrow is not guaranteed. And so, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (4:7b).
