Psalm 118:8-14
While FaceTiming with our three-year old granddaughter, Lyric, she sang a little song for us about bringing home a baby bumblebee which finally “stings” her and we all laughed. But that was just a song. A bee sting is no laughing matter, especially when there’s a swarm of them!
The psalmist in Psalm 118 says he was so surrounded by trouble that it was not unlike a swarm of bees. Notice he didn’t find help in humanity. His help came only from the Lord.
Being a pastor, I have prayed with many people as they were wheeled into surgery. The scripture I usually share is, “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). I then stop and tell them that the One who created the entire universe is the One helping them today. What a thought! The same God who hung the stars, planted the trees, and filled the oceans is the One who is helping us today. Let’s make Him our refuge. Let’s declare Him our strength and our song.
