Jump In With Both Feet

Mark 10:24-31
It is a bit unsettling to hear Jesus proclaim that it is hard to enter the kingdom of God. After all, haven’t we been taught that we are saved through God’s gift of grace? If that is so, how is it so hard? Perhaps we misunderstand the angle of the difficulty.
We spend so much time and effort trying to figure out how to shrink a camel to fit through the eye of a needle, but maybe that is not the hard part after all. The real challenge lies in becoming part of the kingdom where God reigns. The difficulty is in recognizing that all the things we have been working toward—financial security, social status, physical fitness, technical expertise, and more—have no value in the kingdom where God reigns. What matters in God’s kingdom is faithfulness, humility, justice, and self-giving love.
So perhaps it is not hard to unlock the door to the kingdom of God—Christ Jesus has already taken care of that—but to step into the reign of God with both feet necessitates letting go of everything we once considered valuable.
