Rooted Through the Storms
January 28th, 2022
Colossians 2:6-15
My friend, Jim, dropped dead. He was a good Christian; a great guy. He was a servant of the Lord in every sense of the way. But he died. This was a very unexpected death. There was no time to prepare. There was no time to say good-byes. Nothing. One minute seemingly fine, he was gone the next minute.
Over the years, I’ve dealt with families in those situations. I’ve seen people shaken to the core. Sometimes never recovering. But Jim’s wife, Betty is also a tremendous Christian. She was confident of God’s hand upon her life. She rested in the presence of Jesus. She was certain of the grace and power of God that would help her through the coming dark days. The Psalmist would have said about her: “Like a tree planted by the streams of water” (Psalm 1:3a). The storm had come, but it did not blow her away. Her leaf did not wither. God was alive and well deep in her soul. Betty was rooted, built up, and strengthened in the faith. That’s the recipe for surviving the inevitable dark storms of life.
