Matthew 13:13-23
In 1944, Elbert was on board the USS Antigua engaged in World War II. The Antigua would sporadically return to Pier 46 in San Francisco to replenish supplies. Elbert’s wife, Betty, moved across the country in hopes of seeing her husband when he returned on those visits.
Elbert wasn’t allowed to communicate information about the ship’s location for fear the enemy would intercept the information. But it wasn’t long before the young couple came up with a plan. When Betty received letters from Elbert she could read them as written to find out how he was, but if she read the letters using the “coded” message that only they understood, she discovered exactly when his ship would arrive at the pier.
Jesus’ parables communicate truth in much the same way. His parables are based on common happenings that people living in the first century would be familiar with, but they contained a much deeper truth. The key to understanding the deeper truths of the parables is to be in relationship with the Author.
