The Words of Our Mouths
January 4th, 2022
James 3:1-12
Once we spill words out of our mouths, we have to live with the consequences. My dad used to tell me when I wanted to get away with my excuses, “that is a tall story.” We all stumble when it comes to the tongue. Some want to be the experts—the ones who know the whole story—others like to give pieces of advice, and then there are the teachers and the preachers, you name it.
Our words have the potential to fix things: if I say it, I may believe it. That is why it’s so easy to bless and curse with the same tongue. But as much as you bite your tongue, the essence of what comes out is the inner part of the heart. Have you looked lately? What are the words you use more frequently? Have you taken some time of silence to consider the outcomes of your communication with others?
To say the right thing at the right time takes discipline. We need to surrender and let the Holy Spirit burn whatever it is taking control over our tongue. We rest in Him knowing that every single word will be used to bless God’s creation.
