Delight in God
September 29th, 2021
Ecclesiastes 3:1-14
Some people like to be scared. I am not one of those people. I don’t like scary movies or books. I choose not to go to places designed to frighten people. For some, it is a thrill they enjoy. For me, it’s just too scary.
Ecclesiastes 3, particularly verse 14, point us in a direction that leads people to “fear” God. The writer says that “everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added . . . nothing taken from it.” God has the final say. But this fear the writer mentions isn’t fear that is scary. This is related to humility. God is guiding us not to severe control or gluttony of the things of life, but to proper delight in the gifts of God.
This humility is something that is hard to come by in human nature. We often desire not the gifts that God gives us, but the accumulation of power, glory, and fame—in all its forms. We behave as if our lives will go on here forever.
Stop and take a few moments to reflect on what God has provided in your life.
