The Gift of Mercy
April 9th, 2021
Titus 3:1-11
Washed and renewed. Cleansed and made new. Not because of the good things we have done, but because of the mercy of God. This is who our God is: a saving and merciful God. A God who is on our side. A God who dwells in us by the Spirit.
We do not have to work our way up to God. We do not need to possess all the right answers or jump through the right hoops. Salvation is not something that is just out of reach, waiting for us to stretch a little further to grab hold of it. At the core of our faith is the truth that it is God who does the saving, God who does the renewing, God who does the washing.
It is not our ability to follow the rules that makes us new. It is not our church attendance. It is not our volunteerism. These good and helpful things don’t make us clean. It is only mercy.
Today we remember this gift. We remember who we used to be. We give thanks for the mercy of God and the change we have experienced through the work of Spirit.
