Overcome The World Through Faith
February 26th, 2021
1 John 5:1-12
The ideas of discipline and submission seem unsavory, unpleasant, burdensome. If we are not careful, we can be tricked into the belief that freedom is a lack of rules. In 1 John 5, we are reminded of the love of our Father and that our expression of love is founded in our choice to obey our Father.
So many times over the years, I have told my children that to the utmost of my ability, I make choices based upon my love and care for their well-being. I am neither a perfect parent nor a perfect human so there have been mistakes and even selfish choices from time to time. Yet, my life experience as a parent who deeply loves their children helps me to understand something of the heart of God here.
As I explore the depths of my love for my children, I am awed by the understanding that this is how the Father loves me. My response to that Fatherly love is a desire to love God in return. This is the kind of love, the kind of faith, that opens our hearts to have victory over sin.
