Joshua 24:19-28
The passage of time and the changing of culture all make it easy for us to read the words of Joshua to the Israelites and miss the weight of the situation. We may imagine his words to be an easy recipe for the abundant life that the Israelites stood to inherit. One can stand on this side of the text and say, “If only they would have let the idols go.” We may imagine those idols to be silly aspects of an ancient culture. Yet, we are blind to our own cultural idols which wield extremely strong ties in our own lives.
When I first began to honestly explore God’s call to missions on my life. One of the biggest hurdles for me was giving up my dream of the American expectation of a house, a white fence, and a home with a beautiful interior. The culture I grew up in had created the expectation that this was my right and my inheritance. When God called me to missions and I hesitated over the loss of those “things,” it became clear to me that they had become idols in my life.
Are there idols in your life?
