Matthew 5:33-37

Ask any schoolteacher and you will quickly find out that often young child have a lot to say when sharing with a willing listener. While these long narrations can be funny, informative, or even exhausting, the words don’t always add to the answer to your question.

Jesus instructed His listeners about the godly life. After the Beatitudes, He continues with foundational information for the Christian walk. When He gets to oaths, Jesus makes it clear: say what you mean, and mean what you say. Don’t add extra information. Don’t try to make yourself look good or sound better than reality. A simple, honest “yes” or “no” is better than any exaggeration.

Sometimes we hide behind stories and extra information in order to be liked—whether by others or ourselves. Jesus reminds us that, as children of God, our identity is rooted in God. We don’t have to be complicated in order to have value. We must be who God made us and called us to be, simply.
