Isaiah 34:8-17

In a world infatuated with superheroes, it becomes easy for us to think that justice is up to us. If somehow, we could pass the right laws, elect the right officials, put the bad people away, overcome evil with power and might, we would have justice. We forget that justice belongs to God.

We initially read Isaiah 34 and become quite overwhelmed because it seems so harsh. We might even struggle to understand how a loving God could even use words like “vengeance” and “retribution.” But in the face of evil and injustice, there will come a day when God will come and put an end to the injustices of the world. There will come a day when evil and darkness will be no more.

God will avenge the wrongs done to God’s people. When we begin to think that evil and darkness will win the day, we should remember passages such as this that remind us God has a day when evil and darkness will forever be put to death.
