God Does Forgive
August 16th, 2020
1 John 1:1-10
I find myself on airplanes frequently, which is a great irony since I have an irrational fear of flying. Fear like mine gets one thinking a lot about mortality and one’s relationship with Christ. It took the Lord reminding me over and over again that my forgiveness is not based upon my activity, my clean living, my control of my thought life, or my temptations.
The forgiveness that God extends to me is based upon nothing that I bring to the relationship. It is based upon His kind character, His perfect love, and His faithfulness. God is the source of all faithfulness, all forgiveness, and all purity, as John reminds us in his epistle.
I think we often have a disconnect between what we acknowledge as truth in our minds and with our mouths and what we truly know and believe in our heart and soul. In moments that force us to be honest with God and with ourselves, we find the invitation to believe, to trust, and to accept our mortality and God’s extravagant love.
