Psalm 31:1-8

Our God is a faithful God. In the words of Psalm 3, the psalmist remembers who God is: a refuge, a rock, always and forever, never letting go, full of mercy and steadfast love. God does not let go and God is always present. At times it is us who are just not present to God. And still God is faithful, never letting go of us.

In the midst of a circumstance that is unsettling and threatens to throw the psalmist off balance, we hear a cry for God, the rock. The psalmist cries, “In you, LORD, I have taken refuge” (v. 1). The basis of the cry is found in these words: in you. It is the LORD God to whom the psalmist turns, that he might find a spacious, broad place to stand; a rock upon which to anchor.

The circumstances of life threaten to unbalance us; yet, the psalmist reminds us to turn to our faithful God, in whom we can find a spacious place to stand.
