I Do It
July 12th, 2020
Psalm 19:7-14
“I do it!” These are the words of my two-year-old who has discovered her ability to do things on her own, the way she wants to do them. But “I do it” can get us into a lot of trouble. Let’s be honest, we humans don’t have a good track record when it comes to doing things our way. We tend to mess things up when we choose to live the way we want to live.
God gives us instructions on how to live because God is trying to protect us from ourselves, not because God just likes to wield arbitrary laws. Just as parents instruct their children to not play in the busy street or put their hand on the hot stove, God’s law is there to keep us from harm and danger.
“I do it” can get us into a lot of trouble and heartache. Although we may not like the idea of anyone telling us how to live, God really is looking out for us. God’s intention is not to keep us from enjoying life, but to enable us to live a long and good life.
