John 9:13-23
After Jesus had healed the man born blind, word of the miracle made it back to the Pharisees. They were incensed because Jesus performed the healing on the Sabbath. They questioned the man about the details. Interestingly, the man had no idea who had healed him, thinking perhaps He was a prophet (v. 17). The Pharisees persisted and brought the man’s parents in to interrogate them to confirm the man’s blindness from birth.
The Pharisees were trying to make sense of the incomprehensible. Was Jesus a prophet? Or a demon? Or could it be He was who He claimed to be? If He was from God, why was He breaking the rules?
Sometimes obedience to God means breaking the rules that have been imposed on us by legalism, cultural perspectives, or even misplaced loyalties. Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath not because He wanted to break the rules, but because this act of healing would restore the blind man to community. It was an act of mercy.
