An Easy Yoke Is Not Burdensome
March 13th, 2020
1 John 5:1-12
Have you ever known someone who could be described as “high maintenance”? If you can identify a high maintenance person in your life, you may see the demands they create on others around them—making it difficult to please them. Interacting with someone like this is burdensome—it can drag you down and wear you out.
How wonderful it is to know that keeping God’s commands is not burdensome! God is not like our high maintenance friend who demands more than we can give. God’s commands are to love God with all you are and to love your neighbor. As Jesus said, “my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30).
This “easy yoke” propels us towards victory of faith, which isn’t that we can use the world’s power in a more accomplished way. Faith is believing Jesus is the Son of God and loving our neighbors. This is contrary to the world’s “wisdom” and power. Therefore, we have victory not because of spiritual piety but living faith in Jesus and loving our neighbor. This is superior to the world’s power. This is victory in Christ.
