Habakkuk 1:1-6
Imagine a farmer standing beside his field with his hat in his hand, watching the coming rain. You could see him and say, “Oh the farmer is anticipating the rain!” Or, you could look at him and say, “That poor farmer is dreading the rain!” There’s nothing the farmer can do about the rain: he can’t force it, and he can’t prevent it. All he can do is watch.
What a perfect metaphor for life. There are so many things that we can do nothing about—except watch. We can’t change the diagnosis, the relationship, or the brokenness. We can only watch and wait and (sometimes) worry.
God, however, invites us to choose to cherish the watching. When we sit back and let God be God, amazing things begin; miracles happen, healing happens, and unity happens. Our only responsibility is to watch in wonder at what God can do.
The next time you are tempted to watch and worry, choose to watch and wonder instead. God is doing wonderful things if we’d only notice.
