Matthew 8:5-17
In Matthew’s narrative we see a man we don’t really know. What we do learn is that he recognizes that Jesus is one to be honored and one who can do something to help. More importantly, we don’t get the sense that he is expressing a false humility to try and get results from Jesus. His belief is sincere. Some might even say his belief is extreme.
If you read on, you will see this response: When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith” (v.10). Could Jesus really mean, anyone in Israel? Shockingly, it was a centurion who was recognized for his faith.
Could Jesus be counting on me and thinking, “I cannot find anyone with such faith or such passion.” Could He be thinking, “I cannot find anyone who believes I am still making a difference in the lives of the ones I created.” Can He find someone in you?
