Trust and Obey

Hosea 11:1-11
Children don’t always do as they are told. That’s no secret to those of us privileged to work with or have children. Both as a parent and a teacher, I have lovingly requested that a child perform a task over and over only to wonder if there is actually sound coming from my mouth. My voice isn’t reaching their little ears; otherwise they certainly would quickly obey!
Part of growing up is learning to trust and obey the voices of parents, teachers, and other caregivers. Just as we as adults get frustrated when our tiny humans don’t take our words to heart, God is frustrated when His children aren’t obedient either.
From the beginning of time, God has spoken loving guidance to His people, longing for them to choose to follow. Hosea says, “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. But the more they were called, the more they went away from me” (11:1 2). “We all, like sheep, have gone astray,” (Isaiah 53:6a). God longs for us to listen for His voice and make the choice to follow Him.
