Acts 18:18-28

When a contestant on a popular television game show thinks Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were sons of Adam, viewers know the contestant has not included enough Bible study in their preparation for the show.

All four believers in Acts 18—Paul, Priscilla, Aquila, and Apollos—were steeped in Scripture. Although Apollos had already accepted the baptism of John, he was an eager student when Priscilla and Aquila told him about Jesus. Since he already knew the Scriptures, he readily accepted their teaching, and was now ready to preach a more accurate gospel.

Acts 18 inspires us to be familiar with Scripture—not to prove we are right but to prove Jesus is the Way. Today we have so many study helps, while the earliest Christians had only the Jewish Scriptures.

Acts 18 also encourages us to be bold in sharing our faith. Perhaps we won’t participate in public debate, like Apollos, or enter a synagogue to reason with worshippers, like Paul. But, with a knowledge of the Bible, Christians can be ready to share the gospel whenever the Spirit leads.
