Titus 1:10-16

Towards the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave His followers a bit of advice on how to distinguish the “real deal” disciple from a counterfeit: look at the fruit their life produces.

Titus is tapping into this same theme when helping this young church know how to deal with false teachers. There were several people in and around the church who were teaching all sorts of things that weren’t grounded in the gospel. Many of the false teachers had shady and selfish motives in doing so. Apparently the church had trouble sorting out who to listen to, so Titus reminds them of Jesus’ formula. Look at the fruit of their actions.

Any leader or teacher can wave a Bible in front of a crowd and claim to represent Jesus. Sometimes it can be tempting to fall in with persuasive folks claiming to speak for God or God’s people. But do their actions back up their words? If they don’t, we should move on.

The leaders we listen to and take our cues from ought to be ones who show themselves to be true by their actions.
