Our Offering To God
October 10th, 2019
Romans 6:12-23
Paul is putting the importance of leaving our old way of life, and fully entering the new one, in the sharpest terms possible. “Count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Isn’t this what your baptism symbolized? That your old life was put down with the death of Jesus on the cross, and that your new life rose with Him as well? If this is the case (and it is!), then it’s critical that we no longer let the old powers of sin and death rule any longer in the body that now belongs to God.
Of course, this is sometimes easier said than done. The enemy of our souls doesn’t like to lose a grip on a human heart. Temptations come to all of us, as they did to Jesus. It’s important to remember, however, that these powers no longer reign in our lives, and so it is not necessary to surrender to their destructive impulses.
Instead of offering ourselves to sin, we offer ourselves to God “as those who have been brought from death to life” (v. 13).
