Proverbs 12:15-28

Lying is a desperate attempt to get out of dreaded punishment, but lying shows great weakness. Given plenty of time, the truth rises to the top, exposes the lie, and the avoided punishment is eventually faced. The Lord hates lying. One of the ten commands is to not bear false witness against your neighbor (Exodus 20:16). Lying is a sinful action against a known rule of God.

On the other hand, a trustworthy person has turned her heart away from deception to honesty and truth in actions and motives. There’s a desire to pursue what is right in the face of wrongs, even accepting its punishment. Truthfulness is strangely powerful—exposing lies, declaring freedom.

Jesus calls himself the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6). Through Christ, God has exposed the extent of the power of truthfulness and freedom through the work of our salvation. It is no wonder that the Lord delights in trustworthiness!
