Acts 4:1-12

Peter and John have been called before the religious rulers to give an account for a few things. Namely, they’re being questioned about a good deed they did (the healing of a lame beggar) and a corresponding message of hope they spoke (in Jesus, there is resurrection from the dead).

After a night in jail, they are brought before the rulers and asked a simple question, “By what power or what name did you do this?” (v. 7b).

It’s hard to imagine the nerve it must have taken to speak the truth boldly, despite the trouble it might bring them. How tempting it must have been to sidestep the question, to soften the edges, to qualify the reality!

And yet, Peter, “filled with the Holy Spirit,” began to answer honestly, “It is by the name of Jesus Christ . . . ” (v. 10).

What else were they to say? There was no other explanation. There was no other name. The whole of human history had turned on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The good work they were doing and hopeful words they were speaking were because of Jesus. So, when asked, they answered. Boldly.

May it be so with us today.
