I Can’t Hear You!
August 10th, 2019
Acts 7:51-60
Sometimes when a young child (or even older people) does not want to hear something he plugs his ears. It’s as if stopping the sound waves from entering his ears will somehow stop the dreadful news from happening. He blocks out the incoming message.
The Sanhedrin were not happy with Stephen or his speech to the council. The writer of the Book of Acts says that when the council heard what Stephen had to say, “they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him” (7:54b). This, however, did not stop Stephen, who being “full of the Holy Spirit,” saw Jesus and shared his vision with the angry crowd. And that was just too much from them to take. They covered their ears, screamed, and committed murder for the things Stephen said.
The religious people of the disciples’ day blocked out the incoming message from God. “We don’t want to hear it!” They took it a step further and did harm to God’s messenger. They were so sure of themselves and so angry. They were so wrong. By blocking out the message of God, they missed an opportunity to join God in His kingdom.
Are you covering your ears to God’s word today?
