Genesis 4:1-12

I have two sons and one daughter. The boys are relatively close in age and have had each other as playmates for awhile now. Beatrice is the newer addition to the family, but even with the age difference the siblings can get along really well—for the most part. At times a disturbance will erupt, and depending on the amount of sleep or level of hunger felt by the participants, the squabble could be small or of epic proportions.

The boys in particular wonder every once in a while, why they must have a brother. Why can’t I be the only one? Why must I put up with the annoyances of having a brother: he’s too loud, he’s too smelly, he’s too mess, he’s too bossy. They get frustrated and irritated with the other encroaching on their space.

God makes it very clear that we are called to care for each other—our brothers and sisters. We don’t get to choose who our brothers and sisters are, but we do get to choose to love. Caring for our brothers and sisters is a distinctive trait of those following Christ. How have you loved your brothers and sisters today?
