Romans 6:1-11
You may have heard the phrase, “no man left behind.” All the way back to Greek and Roman times, soldiers were dedicated, honor-bound, to make sure their fellow soldiers returned from battle: leave no one behind.
In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he outlines the theological foundations of Christianity: what we believe and why. Chapter five provides a look at grace and it’s transformative power in the life of a sinner. Where sin increased, grace increase in order that “grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (v. 21). We find life in God through the grace of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amazing!
Sin and death are the enemy of humanity—wielding hostile powers again us, trying to defeat what God created and called good. Jesus, by His obedient death on the cross defeats sin, overcomes death through His resurrection. When we accept God’s grace, we also die with Christ, but we don’t have to be stuck behind enemy lines. Grace is freedom from the enemy.
