Matthew 5:38-48

Perfection? How can anyone be perfect like God? Isn’t that impossible? The Greek word for perfect is teleios, which means to complete, or to fulfill it’s created purpose. To be “perfect” is to fulfill your created purpose.

I have a beat up, ugly chair in my office. What is the purpose of this chair? In order for it to be perfect what must it do? The purpose of the chair is to allow me to have a place to sit and work. In order for the chair to be perfect it must complete its created purpose. My chair is perfect because it continues to hold me up.

When Jesus is telling us to be perfect, He is instructing us to fulfill our created purpose just as God is fulfilling His purpose through Jesus.

As we look at the whole passage of Matthew 5:38-48, we see that Jesus is teaching His disciples to live differently than the world culture around them, to live holy. By living differently, we show the world who our God is and hopefully give them glimpses of perfection through our lives. How well are you doing fulfilling your created purpose?
