Ephesians 2:11-22

We all worry, to some degree, about the future. In John 14:5, Thomas shows his true colors and asks a very literal question, “how can we know the way?”. Perhaps he was just giving voice to what the other disciples were thinking at that moment. The road ahead was unknown and, quite frankly, very daunting. The disciples had journeyed with Jesus and now he was talking about leaving them. Their confidence turned to uncertainty: Why is he leaving? Where is he going? What will we do without him?

These questions are not unlike the questions we ask today. The road ahead includes the unknown: fearful situations, unmanageable scenarios, formidable tasks. It is into the midst of these fears that Jesus speaks words of hope and reassurance. We are reminded in this passage that paramount to all of this is a relationship. Although we may not have the answers, we can trust in the One who does, with whom we have relationship. Jesus has given us this great promise: “whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing and . . . even greater things than these” (v. 12b).
