The Ultimate Power
April 8th, 2019
Ephesians 1:15-23
Our world is obsessed with power. Who has it? Who does not? Where can I get it? A short time of watching the news and you will see plenty of examples of power and how it has gone wrong. Movies, television shows, documentaries, and social media are rife with the world’s view of power. A quick Internet search on “power quotes” leads to hundreds of thousands results.
“The measure of a man is what he does with power.” Plato
“If you think you are too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent a night with a mosquito.” African proverb
And yet, Paul is reminding the Ephesians—and us—that the greatest, ultimate power is the power God has. The power of God extends over death, raising the Lord Jesus Christ from death to the heavenly realms. Previously, Paul states that this power is for those who believe (v.19a).
Forget the world’s fleeting and fickle power. Forget power plays and power grabs. Let’s rest in the knowledge that God has the ultimate power and he extends it to us for holy living through his Holy Spirit
