Where Do You Belong?

Exodus 23:1-9

Everyone wants to belong. Look at the local school playground and you see groups of kids clumped together. Some will do whatever it takes to be a part of a specific group. Anything to avoid being on the outside, alone.

The Israelites have been freed from Egyptian oppression where they were poor slaves, foreigners in a foreign country. As God brought them out of slavery, guiding them toward the promised land, he set up boundaries, markers for living a godly life. The heart of God takes on this shape in our world.

In our human quest to belong, certain groups of people often fall to the side. The poor, lacking resources others take for granted, quickly are marginalized, set outside the circle of belonging. God, however, calls everyone to himself no matter what resources they may or may not have. God also calls his children to create space and open hearts for people we may not naturally include.

Allow God to show you someone you may not have noticed before and extend God’s grace to that person.
