Matthew 2:7-15
The story of the Wise Men is one of mystery, intrigue, and adventure. Its characters have captured our imagination and are recognized the world over. It seems so unlikely that these Gentiles, with their minimal understanding of Jewish religious history and their primitive study of nature, were led by God to discover the King of the Jews. Their journey of discovery reminds us just how much God seeks to reveal himself. People sensed that God was about to reveal the mystery “hidden from the ages.” Still, refusing to let go of their pre-conceived notions, they missed it.
God delights in revealing himself to us. Scripture is full of admonitions to pay attention, stay alert, and keep watch. We must not be so sure of how and with whom God will work that we quit paying attention. We may just miss it. The Wise Men went home with more than their memory of worshiping the child or the joy of their discovery. They went home as part of the hope and future of God in the world.
