Luke 1:46-56

Mary’s song has become one of the great hymns of the Church—the Magnificat. She began with her own gratitude for the favor God had bestowed on her. She was at the bottom of the social ladder: young, a woman, poor, a peasant and a Jew. That God chose her was almost inconceivable.

Mary had a strong sense of being a part of God’s people who had a history and a future, and for whom her great news is the best ever told! The remaining refrains of Mary’s song are what have been called some of the most revolutionary words ever written. Mary’s words make it clear that in the coming kingdom, the proud will be humbled, and generations of oppressed peoples will be given hope. Mary’s song declares that the kingdom of God inaugurated in the birth of her son is a new order breaking in on old ways, old values, and old assumptions. Mary sang in gratitude for God’s grace and mercy. This mercy is extended to us as followers of Christ.
