Leviticus 18:21-30

“I am the LORD.” This phrase, or a longer version of it, appears nearly 50 times in the book of Leviticus alone. From early on in my relationship with Jesus I have been taught that when God repeats something in the Scriptures it is important, so I’d better listen with open ears. Every time the phrase is repeated the implication is, “I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt; listen to what I say and obey.” God had set his people free from slavery, and when they obeyed, things went well. When they turned from obedience, things went badly for them, sometimes in a hurry.

When we declare, “Jesus Christ is Lord,” we are not only acknowledging that we have accepted His free and gracious offer of forgiveness of sins. We are also declaring, “Jesus is number one in my life. When He speaks, I will obey.” The greatest commandment He calls us to, of course, is to love Him and love our neighbors. A life of obedience to God is definitely not always easy, but God is always faithful.
