Matthew 5:13-20

Have you ever been in a place so dark you could not see anything, not even your own hand? When there is enough light to see something—anything—again, one may experience great relief.

Perhaps the unsettling darkness is one of the reasons Jesus talks about light so often. Darkness can be frightening, but light is comfort and life. In a world immersed in the deep darkness of sin, the light of Jesus’ disciples can also give life and lead people into the light of God’s glory. What does it mean to be light? According to Jesus, good deeds and following the law. Following the law should lead to good deeds, good deeds bring people to the light.

This is why Jesus proceeds to remind his disciples that the law is still important. People following the law show kindness to widows, orphans, foreigners, and their own families. They help their community. People of the light love their neighbors. They remember God’s promises.
