Luke 12:1-12

In kindergarten, we played the game “Button, Button, Who’s Got the Button?” Everyone sat in a circle, eyes closed, hands behind their back. The teacher walked around the circle, and quietly placed the button in someone’s hand. When everyone had opened their eyes, it was time to guess who had the button.

It was easy to guess. Who is smiling? Who has a red face? Who won’t look you in the eye? The next turn, it happened all over again. We can’t hide a secret, even when we’re the only one who knows!

If we thought we could keep our sin under wraps, Luke 12 puts those fantasies to rest. Our world loves to expose a scandal. One after another, secret sins have a way of getting out and making themselves known, especially in a world connected by social media.

Ironically, this highlights the importance of confession. When we own up to our sins appropriately, it provides an opportunity for healing and forgiveness. When we try to cover them up, they have a way of erupting into a bigger mess than we could have imagined.
